Heat output at 5°F across the certified data

Across 8,300 units with both figures, the median 5°F heat output is 77% of the 47°F rating.

For variable-speed units, the 47°F rating is a nominal-speed test. Tests use different compressor speeds.

How the units are distributed

One row per certified model number (the unit), using the median share of its 47°F rating across that unit's certified combinations. A model number sold under seven brands counts once; a unit with 400 indoor pairings counts once. Of 8,420 units, 8,300 have both figures; 120 have no ratio and are excluded.

Each bar counts units by their median share of the 47°F rating.

Examples from both ends of the distribution

Each row below is one certified pairing of a unit near an end of the distribution. The link opens that certificate's figures. A unit's other pairings can differ.

Heat outputs are certified Btu/h; the share is 5°F output divided by the 47°F rating.

Why can the share exceed 100%?

For A-CAD12-0, the certified data shows 46,000 Btu/h at 5°F and 12,000 Btu/h at 47°F: 383% when one is divided by the other. This is a variable-speed unit. Its 47°F figure is a nominal-speed rating; its 5°F figure is a full-speed test result. Tests use different compressor speeds.

The certified data does not explain the size of this difference. These are the submitted certified figures, with no correction applied here. The ratio compares the two tests; it is not a measure of output at one fixed compressor speed.

How the study is calculated

For each certified pairing with both capacities and a positive 47°F rating, divide heat output at 5°F by the 47°F rating. Take the median of those ratios for each outdoor unit, then summarize those unit medians. A median halfway between two observations is their average. Each unit contributes once to the histogram.

Model-number patterns and listed indoor/outdoor pairs are grouped with their outdoor unit. Brand names are attributes of a unit. Missing figures are excluded from the relevant calculation. The group tables state how many units have both figures. Displayed percentages are rounded, and a share below 100% never prints as 100%. Shares of units in the first table keep one decimal. Medians are whole numbers, because the certified capacities behind them are declared to the nearest 100, 200, or 500 Btu/h. Bin boundaries use the unrounded values.

Absolute output, the indoor pairing, and a house's design load determine the comparison for a particular installation. See the full methodology and size calculator.
