Cold-climate heat pumps for Manitoba

Across the 74 postal areas in Manitoba, the winter design temperature runs from −26°F (−32°C) to −18°F (−28°C) for most areas, with a median of −18°F (−28°C).

The design temperature is the annual 99.6% value: only the coldest 35 hours of an average year fall below it. Each area takes it from the nearest weather station, 2015 to 2024.

Sizes certified to cover a typical house at −18°F

The size calculator uses 22 to 38 Btu/h per square foot for a typical house where the design temperature is below 0°F. Below 5°F the certified data has no figure. Sizes are compared on the 5°F full-speed test.

For each type: the smallest size class whose median model is certified to deliver the bottom of the range at 5°F, and the smallest that reaches the top. The medians count one value per model. Size classes are named by cooling capacity.

1,500 sq ft: 33,000 to 57,000 Btu/h

2,500 sq ft: 55,000 to 95,000 Btu/h

No single size class has a median model certified for 55,000 Btu/h at 5°F. A load this size is normally met by more than one system, or by zones.
